Balance

What strategies do you use to maintain your health and well-being?

To main health and well-being for my family I try my best to prepare well balanced meals. When you learn how to eat well balanced meals and the correct ratios for those meals a diet shouldn’t be needed. Of course there are circumstances that do need specific diets but if you are a fairly healthy person you should just need a well balanced lifestyle.

Each morning my family starts with a well balanced breakfast. First a source of protein, eggs, a breakfast meat, even cheese. Then a grain, toast, oatmeal, cereal. And then we move on to fruits and vegetables. For my boys each day is started with cups of milk. I am lactose intolerant so I get my dairy from cheese or yogurt that don’t effect me quite as much.

At lunch it’s the same deal. A very common lunch in my household is a sandwich with meat and cheese. A piece of fruit like an apple or a vegetable like cucumber slices. Very often we will include a string cheese to get that extra boost of calcium.

For dinner again it is the same balance. Let’s say the main item for dinner was chicken. Then I would add a grain or carb like a roll, rice or potatoes. Then I would add a vegetable like green beans or carrots.

For dessert there really is no balance, it is the most sugary thing of the day, as it should be.

Now not every meal in my home is going to be perfectly balanced and healthy. We are house that loves pizza and burgers. I love to bake and those are hard to say no to. But, I still try to show my kids healthy options without them having to feel deprived of a good treat. I want to show my kids to have a good relationship with food. Sure it can be delicious and it can also be a bit overwhelming or hard to handle. I want to show them how to eat balanced so they can know how food can make them strong and keep their bodies healthy, it’s not just something that can make you fat.
