As a mom we know there are no true sick days when you have children to take care of. Unless you are so sick you need to stay away from your kids so they won’t be sick, you have to continue on as a parent as best as possible. So, how do you handle parenthood when you are sick but still have little ones who need you?
When I get sick I know first thing that morning that my kids will be watching more TV than usual so that I will get the time I need to rest and take care of myself. It is so easy as a parent to think you just have to push your sickness aside and just try to go on as if you are 100%. Don’t do that to yourself. It’s better to acknowledge that you are sick, take it slow and let yourself get better. The sooner you do so, the sooner you will be back to feeling 100% so you can take care of your kids.
So my tips for a sick day with kids are….
– Allow more screen time.
– Keep meals simple and comforting to your sick body.
– Encourage independent play.
-Make more time for books than running around playing.
– Explain to your kids how you are feeling and teach them to be have empathy for people when they are sick.
– Lay together in bed or on the couch. Cuddle. Encourage a lazy, slow day.
